On 6 and 9 August 1945, the United States detonated two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing as many as 226,000 people, plus many more who died of radiation-related cancers in the following years. Most of the victims were civilians. Today, nine nuclear-armed states possess 12,500 nuclear warheads, and at least four other countries have engaged in illegal nuclear development programs.

Ward Wilson, author of the recently published It is Possible: A future without nuclear weapons, will share the good news: the recently enacted Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is the first legally binding international agreement to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons with the ultimate goal being their total elimination.
